Subject of examination

Preliminary task definition from documents, images and a description of the item supplied.

  • Description and available images
  • Construction features and condition
  • Provenance and characteristics documents

Examination questions

  • Which object features matter for the question asked?
  • Are the materials sufficient to define the work scope preliminarily?
  • Which checks require the object itself and a relevant specialist?

The suggested wording is a starting point. Before agreeing the task, establish which objects are available, which features can be examined and the result format needed. An excessively broad question is better divided into several verifiable tasks.

What to prepare

  • An overall view and photographs of significant areas
  • Markings and accompanying documents
  • Condition description and precise questions

Scope and limitations

Preliminary viewing of photographs does not replace a complete classification examination or authorise circulation of the item.

Missing materials should be identified in advance. If they are insufficient, this may change the scope, require additional objects or prevent an answer. A disputing party's assumption is not itself a specialist examination result.

Before work begins

The subject, questions, object access, personnel, result format, timing and cost are agreed separately. Before work starts, you receive the agreed question list, cost and timeframe.

Relating documents and images to a particular product

Preliminary analysis needs to establish exactly which object is involved. A shop's model name, photograph caption and report identifier may differ. First collect existing documents in one inventory and identify which concern a particular item and which describe a model or series generally.

What to explain in your enquiry

  • How the object is identified in the existing report or accompanying document.
  • Which markings and individual features are already recorded in images.
  • Where the photographs supplied came from and which period they concern.
  • Which condition changes are documented and when they were recorded.
  • Which answer needs checking: the description, classification or sufficiency of supplied materials.

A product passport or reference sheet with a similar image does not automatically establish that a particular item matches the model described. Identify if the connection rests only on the owner's account. Where names differ, retain both versions and their sources without independently correcting original documents.

Condition information also relates to a particular date. A later description does not always reconstruct an earlier condition, and a photograph may omit important properties. At the preliminary stage, the task identifies available data and the questions they allow to be discussed. This is not an independent classification finding or a document authorising circulation.
